Good condition antique US Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 caliber that is serial number 417xxx, which dates it to manufacture in 1888. Other guns with nearby serial numbers are listed as having been issued to Company H of the 3rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1898 during the Spanish American War. Mechanically functions fine and tight. Lock is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle. Breech block is marked “MODEL 1884”. Barrel has “VP” and eagle head proof marks. Metal finish is old arsenal reblue with some turning plum brown. Bore is fair with good rifling and some pitting. Stock was refinished and has even color. Complete with correct original cleaning rod. A good example of a classic Trapdoor Springfield Rifle.
