
MFG 1874-ISSUED TO PRIVATE BRENNESTAHL 5TH INFANTR
Very good condition antique US Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 Government caliber that is serial number 32571 and comes with extensive research papers on this gun. According to the papers, this rifle was produced circa October-December 1874 and was issued to Private Samuel M. Brennestahl of Company G, 5th Infantry Regiment on October 11, 1879. It was declared unserviceable on December 6, 1879 and returned to Springfield Armory to be overhauled. The paper also states that a name “ADRIAN LEO EDWARD CAHILL” is marked inside the lock, and provides possible identities for this man. The bayonet and tools listed in the papers are not present with the rifle. Rifle mechanically functions fine. Lock is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873” with the American eagle. Breech block is marked “MODEL/1873/eagle head/crossed arrows/U.S.” Rifle has early two click tumbler and early rear sight. Metal finish is original blue showing wear to brown and gray patinas. Bore is very good and bright with strong rifling and a few pits. Stock has original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Left side of wrist has an “ESA” inspector cartouche. Complete with correct original cleaning rod. A nice researched Trapdoor Springfield Rifle that will make an excellent addition to a collection!
