Good condition antique German GEW 88 Commission Rifle in 8mm Mauser caliber that was manufactured by Steyr in 1891, as marked on the receiver. Rifle is NOT Turk marked or modified and NOT updated to 88/05 configuration. Rifle is NOT import marked and has all matching serial numbers except the bolt. This interesting rifle has an “eye over hand” marking in the left side buttstock. This is similar to the Irish Ulster Volunteer Force property stamp, but not identical. Almost looks like an eye and hand of Horus (the Egyptian god). Right side buttstock has a few scratched Chinese characters. Metal has mostly brown and gray patina. Bore is good, has some pitting at the muzzle, otherwise bright with strong rifling. Stock has original finish and shows some wear and handling marks. Mechanically complete and functions fine. Complete with correct original cleaning rod. An interesting GEW 88 rifle that warrants further research and will make a fine addition to a collection.
