Antique U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle – 13th New York Unit Marked

ANTIQUE US MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD RIFLE-13TH NEW YORK UNIT MARKED

Very good condition antique US Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 caliber. Lock is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle. Breech block is correctly marked “MODEL 1884”. Barrel has “VP” and eagle head proof marks. Mechanically functions fine. Rifle is unit marked “13 N.Y.” in the right side buttstock. The 13thNew York Infantry was one of 12 New York regiments federalized for service during the Spanish American War. Metal finish is original blue turning an attractive plum brown patina with some light oxidation throughout. Bore is bright and excellent with strong rifling. Stock has nice original finish and crisp edges with some normal handling marks. Left side of wrist has a sharp clear 1892 dated “SWP” inspector cartouche. Underside of wrist has a sharp clear “circle P” cartouche. Complete with correct original ramrod bayonet. Bayonet lock system works fine. A nice US Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle with an uncommon New York unit marking.
