Very good condition original pre Civil War US Model 1840 cavalry sword that has Ames manufacturer markings on the left ricasso and dated 1859 on the right ricasso, along with “US” and inspector initials. 35 ¼” blade has original bright finish with some gray and brown patina. Still has original leather washer at the base. Brass hilt has attractive patina. Leather covered grip has tight wire wrap and shows some wear. Fitted in correct original steel scabbard that has plum brown patina and no dents. A hard to find US M1840 cavalry saber that will make a fine addition to a collection.
