Good condition WWI German GEW 98 Mauser Rifle in 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57) caliber that was manufactured by Amberg Arsenal in 1917, as marked on the receiver ring. Rifle shows Bavarian use with a “rampant lion” firing proof on the left side of the receiver ring. Rifle is NOT import marked and has all matching serial numbers. Rifle is marked “Gl.V.” on the rear sight. This is belived to indicate rifles that were suitable for “Glassvizier” (scoped sniper) use. Receiver, bolt, and buttplate are original “in the white” with some gray and brown patina. Remaining metal finish is original blue showing wear to the white with some gray and brown patina. Bore is good, gray with good average rifling that shows some normal wear, and some light pitting. Stock has been heavily sanded and thinned. Right side buttstock has faint traces of Imperial German proof mark cartouches. Underside of buttstock has a faint matching serial number. Complete with a replaced cleaning rod.
