BEAUTIFUL DRAGON AND OTHER CHINESE CHARACTERS
Very good condition antique Chinese Model 1871 Mauser Carbine in 11mm Mauser caliber that has Steyr manufacturer markings on the barrel and dated 1876 on the receiver. Carbine is NOT import marked and has all matching serial numbers except the barrel band and nosecap. This interesting gun was sold to China and has Chinese-applied brass tack decoration on both sides of the buttstock including a beautiful dragon on the left side. Right side has three characters that I was told translate to an arsenal. Receiver, bolt, and buttplate are original “in the white”. Buttplate is mostly turned brown patina. Remaining metal finish is original blue showing some normal wear. Bore has a little pitting at the muzzle, otherwise bright and excellent with strong rifling. Stock has original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Rear band spring is an incorrect replacement. Underside of buttstock has nice Imperial German proof mark cartouches. Right side buttstock has faint Imperial German proof mark cartouches. Unit marked “16.D.1.140.” on the buttplate and on the buttplate tang for the 16th (2ND Hannover) Dragoons, Squadron 1, Weapon 140. An interesting, rare, and desirable Chinese marked M71 Mauser Carbine that will make a fine addition to a collection.
