
.58 RIMFIRE-ONLY 5,000 MADE-CONVERTED TO CADET
Good condition antique US Model 1865 (1st Allin Conversion) Trapdoor Springfield Rifle. One of only 5,000 produced by converting Civil War US Model 1863 Springfield rifled muskets to .58 rimfire caliber breech loaders. Lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle and dated 1865. Mechanically functions fine. Rifle was later shortened to a “cadet rifle” configuration with two barrel bands. Barrel measures about 27 ½” from the muzzle to the breech face. Metal has been polished bright. Bore has a few dark rings, otherwise bright with strong rifling. Stock has nice looking finish and shows some normal handling marks, and was thinned as part of the shortening. Left side of forend has a repaired crack between the triggerguard and the barrel line. Left side of stock has an “ESA” inspector cartouche in the flat opposite the lock. Complete with ramrod. A hard to find 1st Allin Conversion that will make a fine addition to a collection.
