
US MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD RIFLE-1ST LOUISIANA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

Good condition antique US Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 caliber that is serial number 430072. This rifle is listed by serial number in the Springfield Research Service book as being issued to the 1st Louisiana Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. This unit was mustered into service between May 25 and June 4, 1898 at Galveston, Texas. The unit initially consisted of 46 officers and 971 enlisted men. It never saw service outside the continental USA. Lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle. Breech block is marked “MODEL 1884”. Barrel has “VP” and eagle head proof marks and an early Model 1873 rear sight. The barrel is misaligned a few degrees to the right. Mechanically functions fine. Metal finish is nice reblue showing a little normal wear. Bore is bright and excellent with strong rifling. Stock has been refinished and shows some normal handling marks. Complete with correct original cleaning rod. A hard to find identified Spanish American War Trapdoor Springfield Rifle.
