MATCHING BUT ROD-GREAT UNIT MARKING
Very good condition antique German 71/84 Mauser Rifle in 11mm Mauser caliber that has Spandau Arsenal markings on the barrel and is dated 1888 on the receiver. Rifle is NOT import marked and has all matching serial numbers except the stacking rod. Very low serial number “17”. Rifle was modified for Jager issue with an added sling swivel in the underside of buttstock and the triggerguard swivel removed with the hole slightly enlarged. Rifle is unit marked “G.R.S.4.88.” on the buttplate tang for the 4th Guard Reserve Rifleman Battalion, Weapon 88. Receiver, bolt, and buttplate are original “in the white” with some gray and brown patina. Remaining metal finish is original blue showing some normal wear. Bore is very good and bright with strong rifling and a few pits. Stock has original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Right side buttstock and underside of buttstock have sharp clear Imperial German proof mark cartouches. A nice 71/84 Mauser rifle with the rare Jager modification and a very low serial number.
