Good condition antique US Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 caliber. Lock is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle. Breech block is correctly marked “MODEL 1884”. Barrel has “VP” and eagle head proof marks. Rifle is serial number 509938. Other rifles with nearby serial numbers were issued to Company I of the 12th New York Infantry in 1898. Mechanically functions fine. Metal is mostly worn to the white, with some gray and brown patina. Bore is very good and bright with strong rifling. Stock has original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Left side of wrist has a nice 1890 dated “SWP” inspector cartouche. Underside of wrist has a “script P in circle” cartouche. Complete with correct original rod bayonet. Bayonet lock system works fine. A good example of a US Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle.
