Very good condition antique German M/71 Mauser converted French Mle 1866 Chassepot Carbine. This interesting gun started life as a French Mle 1866 Chassepot rifle, manufactured by Tulle Arsenal in 1867. Captured by German forces during the Franco-Prussian War and subsequently converted to a cavalry carbine in 11mm Mauser caliber. Gun is NOT import marked and has all matching serial numbers. Mechanically complete and functions fine. Metal finish is original “in the white” with some gray and brown patina. Bore is bright and excellent with strong rifling. Stock has been sanded and refinished, and has nice even color. Right side buttstock and underside of buttstock have faint Imperial German proof mark cartouches. Right side buttstock has original French roundel cartouche and intact wooden plug. Unit marked “R.I.M.1.54.” on the buttplate for a Reserve Infantry Munitions Column. Complete with correct original nonmatching numbered clearing rod. A nice example of a rare German converted Chassepot Carbine that will make an excellent addition to a collection.
