Very good condition original WWI German 98/05 Mauser butcher bayonet that maker marked “PACK OHLIGER & CO. SOLINGEN” on the left ricasso and dated 1917 on the spine. This interesting bayonet has the postwar Weimar “1920” property stamp on the right side of the guard and was modified to a police sidearm by filling the lug slot, grinding the lock button flush, and cutting a notch in the pommel. Left side of guard is unit marked “S.O. 166.” on the left side of the guard for the Schutzpolizei in the Osnabrueck District. Blade has original bright finish with some old nickel plated finish at the base. Hilt has nickel plated finish showing some normal flaking. Wood grips have original finish and a good tight fit with some normal handling marks. Right side has a small crack. Fitted in correct original steel scabbard that has a matching unit marking and another cancelled unit marking. Scabbard has original blue finish showing a little normal wear and a few dents. A rare police sidearm modified 98/05 bayonet that will make a fine addition to a collection.
