Very good condition original pre WWI Imperial German Hirschfanger Model 1871 Mauser bayonet that is maker marked “WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & CO. SOLINGEN” on the left ricasso and dated 1888 on the spine. Bayonet is unit marked “I.M.D.1079.” on the left side of the guard for the 1st Dockyard Division, at Kiel. 19 ½” quillback blade has original bright finish with some patches of brown and gray patina and a few spots of pitting. Hilt has original bright finish largely turned brown patina, with some pitting. Checkered leather washer grips have a good tight fit and no damage. Lock button and leaf spring function fine. Fitted in correct original leather scabbard that has steel throat and tip. Leather shows some normal wear, stitching and staples are tight. Scabbard has a matching unit marking on the throat along with a lined-out Kriegsmarine unit marking. A very rare bayonet that will make an excellent addition to a collection.
