PRE WWI US MODEL 1903 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE-FORMER ROD BAYONET RIFLE
SPRINGFIELD ARMORY-1906 BARREL DATE-EARLY FEATURES

Very good condition pre WWI US Model 1903 Springfield Rifle that is marked “SPRINGFIELD ARMORY” on the receiver and is serial number 31xxx, which dates it to manufacture in 1905. This interesting rifle was originally made as a “Rod Bayonet” rifle in .30-03 caliber and later arsenal overhauled to accept the standard M1905 bayonet, and rechambered for .30-06 caliber. Rifle has early straight handle bolt with “dot” punch mark. Early rear sight with vertical Platinum line. Barrel is marked “SA” for Springfield Armory and dated “8-06” for August 1906. Rifle has nice original blue finish showing a little normal wear. Bore is fair and pitted with worn rifling. Stock has nice original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Early type with no glued-in plugs or recoil lugs. Left side of wrist has a “C.C.V.” inspector cartouche, used by Springfield Armory in 1907. Underside of wrist is marked “circle P”. Forend tip has a small “S” marking. Early handguard, flat with no sighting groove and no steel clips. Complete with correct original front sight hood. A nice early Model 1903 Springfield Rifle that will make a fine addition to a collection.
