Very good condition original Indian Wars US Model 1880 Hunting Knife that is marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” on the left side of the brass guard and serial number “3918” on the right side of the guard. 8 ½” blade has nice original bright finish with a few gray and brown spots and has been sharpened. Brass guard has nice looking patina. Wood grip has original finish and a good tight fit, no damage. Fitted in rare correct original Varney scabbard that is in original early, unmodified configuration. Leather is soft and supple with some wear, crazing, and flaking. Has scratched initials on the reverse. The leather thong that secures the brass belt loop is missing. Marked “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” on the back of the belt loop. A nice US M1880 Hunting Knife for your collection, with a very rare early Varney sheath.
