Good condition antique US Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle in .45-70 caliber. Lock is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” with the American eagle. Breech block is correctly marked “MODEL 1884”. Barrel has “VP” and “eagle head” proof marks. Mechanically functions fine and tight. Metal finish is original blue largely worn to brown and gray patinas. Bore is fair with some dark pitted patches, but has good rifling. Stock has original finish and shows some normal handling marks. Left side of wrist has a nice 1891 dated “SWP” inspector cartouche. Underside of wrist has a “script P in circle” cartouche. Complete with correct original ramrod bayonet. Bayonet lock system works fine. A nice Rod Bayonet Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle.
