Good condition WWI German GEW 98 Mauser rifle in 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57) caliber that is maker marked “WAFFENFABRIK OBERSPREE” on the receiver and dated 1918. This is a rare maker. Receiver also has the “1920” marking indicating postwar Weimar Republic use. Rifle was updated to GEW 98M configuration in the 1930’s with a tangent rear sight installed. Rifle is import marked on the barrel and has matching numbers on the receiver, barrel, and rear sight. Otherwise nonmatching. Metal finish is arsenal reblue showing some wear. Bore is dark with good rifling. Stock was arsenal refinished and shows some handling marks. Right side buttstock and undersides of wrist and forend have Imperial German proof mark cartouches. Complete with cleaning rod. A good example of a GEW 98M Mauser rifle by a rare maker.
